ITTA BENA, Miss. | The Alabama State Hornets got a boost from Ayana Frank, who totaled three hits in an 8-4 victory against the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devilettes Friday.
Mason Quinnie (1-4) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Alabama State (9-16, 3-0). The right-hander went 6.1 innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing no walks, and striking out one.
In addition to her three hits, Frank had a triple and two RBI to lead the Hornets. Alana Scott furnished a noteworthy effort as well, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and two RBI. Jayla Stewart also contributed for Alabama State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a home run and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets were trailing 3-0 in the second inning when Alana Scott scored to cut Alabama State's deficit to 3-1.
The Hornets kept the deficit at 3-1 before taking the lead in the third. Alabama State scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run single off the bat of Frank, which brought the score to 4-3 in favor of the Hornets.
Alabama State held Mississippi Valley State without a run before expanding their lead to 5-3 the following inning.
Alabama State held the Delta Devilettes without a run before their offense got back in action the next inning. Frank crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Hornets, bringing the Alabama State advantage to 6-3.
Mississippi Valley State got within 6-4 until the Hornets scored again in the seventh inning to stretch its lead to 8-4. Alabama State put up two runs in the frame, punctuated with an RBI triple off the bat of Talee Sims. The score remained 8-4 for the rest of the game, as the Hornets coasted to the win.
