Hornets' Baseball Takes Twinbill from Longwood

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State University baseball bounced back from Friday night's loss to sweep a doubleheader from Longwood University on Saturday at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

Multiple homers from Williams and Callaway propel Alabama State past Longwood 11-6

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Jackson Williams and Trey Callaway each hit two home runs to help propel the Alabama State Hornets over the Longwood Lancers 11-6 on Saturday.

Trey Power (2-2) started on the mound and picked up the win for Alabama State (7-7). The left-hander went five innings, giving up five runs, all of them earned, on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out two. Camden Matthews also made an impact on the mound for the Hornets, throwing four innings, giving up one run on four hits, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Callaway added two walks and four RBIs to his two homer day and Williams supplemented his own two big flies with four RBIs for the Hornets. Jorge Bello also helped out for Alabama State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hornets got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Alabama State hit two home runs in the inning on the way to scoring four runs.

The Lancers then rallied to score five runs and take a 5-4 lead before the Hornets got back on the board in the third. Alabama State scored twice on Williams' two-run homer, which brought the score to 6-5 in favor of the Hornets.

Alabama State held Longwood without a run before building their lead to 10-5 in the seventh inning. The Hornets bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a two-run home run off the bat of Callaway.

Alabama State held the Lancers scoreless before their offense got back in action the next inning. Miguel Oropeza crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Hornets, bringing the Alabama State advantage to 11-5. Longwood put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Hornets still coasted to the 11-6 win.

ONTGOMERY, Ala. --Alex Espaillat collected four hits to help power the Alabama State Hornets over the Longwood Lancers 9-3 on Saturday.

Jaxon Baptist (1-3) started on the mound and picked up the win for Alabama State (8-7). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on six hits, allowing two walks and striking out three. Caleb Sanders also made an impact on the mound for the Hornets, throwing two scoreless innings while allowing one hit, with one walk and three strikeouts.

In addition to his four hits, Espaillat had a double and three RBI to lead the Hornets. Jorge Bello put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and an RBI. Devin Chandler also helped out for Alabama State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hornets were trailing 1-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Alabama State's offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a one-run double off the bat of Bello.

The Lancers failed to push any runs across before the Hornets built on their lead in the third inning. which brought the score to 8-1 in favor of the Hornets.

Longwood narrowed Alabama State's lead to 8-3 before the Hornets stretched the advantage to 9-3 in the sixth inning. The Hornets scored once on an RBI single off the bat of . The score remained 9-3 for the rest of the game, as Alabama State coasted to the win.
