TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | Alabama State University softball completed a Saturday sweep of Florida A&M, claiming a 5-3 victory in game one before rallying late for an 8-3 win in the nightcap.
With the pair of wins, the Hornets used timely hitting and strong pitching down the stretch to secure the doubleheader sweep.
Game 1: Alabama State 5, Florida A&M 3
Alabama State jumped out early and never relinquished control, using a three-run third inning to build separation.
The Hornets struck first in the opening frame when Alana Scott launched a two-run home run, scoring McKenzie Owens to give Alabama State a 2-0 lead. The advantage grew in the third as Ayana Frank delivered an RBI single, followed by JaNiyah Boykin and Bailee Williams each driving in runs to cap a three-run inning and extend the lead to 5-0.
Florida A&M chipped away with two runs in the fifth and a solo home run in the seventh, but Alabama State pitching held firm.
Amanda Cintron (5-7) earned the win in the circle, tossing 5.0 innings while allowing two runs on five hits. Mason Quinnie closed out the final two innings to secure the victory.
Offensively, the Hornets were balanced with seven hits. Scott led the way with a two-run homer, while Frank, Boykin, and Williams each recorded an RBI.
Game 2: Alabama State 8, Florida A&M 3
In the second game, Alabama State used a late offensive surge to break open a tight contest.
The Hornets plated three runs in the third inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues and clutch hitting. Meshayla Pettaway delivered the key blow with a two-RBI single as Alabama State took a 3-0 lead.
Florida A&M responded with two runs in the fourth and tied the game in the fifth on a solo home run, setting up a decisive final inning.
Alabama State erupted for five runs in the seventh. Alana Scott delivered a go-ahead two-run double, while Ayana Frank and Pettaway added RBI plays. Pettaway capped the inning with a heads-up steal of home to push the lead to 8-3.
Pettaway finished with a game-high three RBIs, while Scott added two RBIs and Jaibriel Terrell scored twice.
In the circle, Mason Quinnie (3-6) picked up the win, combining with Kohana Pousson and Cintron to limit the Rattlers to three runs.
