AUBURN, Ala. | Alabama State managed just one hit on Tuesday evening as the Hornets dropped a 13-0 decision in seven innings to No. 6 Auburn Tigers baseball at Plainsman Park.
Alabama State (18-17) struggled to generate offense against Auburn's pitching staff, with shortstop Breydon Divi recording the Hornets' lone hit of the contest. The Tigers limited ASU to just one baserunner through the first six innings and struck out nine on the night.
On the mound, Caleb Sander (0-2) was charged with the loss after allowing two runs on six hits over 2.1 innings of work. The Hornets utilized five pitchers in the game as Auburn (25-11) collected 17 hits and scored in five of the six innings they came to the plate.
Auburn got on the board in the first inning with a sacrifice fly before adding another run in the third. The Tigers broke the game open in the fourth, plating five runs highlighted by a two-run home run from Eric Guevara and a two-run blast from Bub Terrell to extend the lead to 7-0.
The Tigers continued to add insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings, including two more home runs in the sixth, pushing the margin to 13-0 and invoking the run-rule after seven innings.
Despite the setback, Alabama State's pitching staff did record a double play defensively, while the Hornets' lone scoring threat came in the seventh inning when Divi reached and advanced into scoring position.
Alabama State travels to Jackson State for a three-game SWAC series beginning Friday in Jackson, Miss.
