Hornets Sting Delta Devils, 11-3

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State baseball used a balanced offensive attack and dominant relief pitching to secure an emphatic 11-3 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Friday evening at Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

The Hornets (20-19, 10-8 SWAC) racked up 19 hits in the contest, highlighted by a breakout performance from Trey Callaway, who went 4-for-5 with two home runs, four RBIs, and three runs scored to lead the charge.

Mississippi Valley State struck first with a two-run fourth inning, but Alabama State responded immediately in the bottom half with a decisive four-run frame to seize control. Callaway ignited the rally with an RBI double down the left-field line, and the Hornets followed with run-scoring hits from Fabian Santana, Devin Chandler, and Breydon Divine to take a 4-2 lead.

After the Delta Devils trimmed the deficit to 4-3 in the fifth, Callaway delivered again—launching a solo home run to center field to push the lead to 5-3. Alabama State added another run later in the inning on a wild pitch, extending the advantage to 6-3.

The game remained within reach until the eighth inning, when the Hornets put it out of hand with a five-run explosion. Callaway capped his standout night with a two-run homer to left, and Alabama State added RBI hits from Alex Espaillat, Cale Clark, and Chandler to stretch the margin to 11-3.

On the mound, Trey Power (5-3) earned the win in relief, delivering an efficient and effective outing. The right-hander tossed 4.1 shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out four and not issuing a walk. He stabilized the game after starter James Peterson went 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits.

Luke Richard (2-3) took the loss for Mississippi Valley State, surrendering five runs on nine hits over four innings.

Alabama State's offensive depth was evident throughout the lineup, with six players recording multiple hits. Chandler drove in two runs, while Santana and Clark each added an RBI in the win.

Alabama State and MVSU will play game two of the series on Saturday at 1 p.m.
