MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Alabama State University baseball secured a convincing 7-2 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Sunday at Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex, completing a clean three-game sweep.
The Hornets (23-19, 13-8 SWAC) used a decisive middle-inning surge and strong relief pitching to control the finale, out-hitting Mississippi Valley State 13-10.
Alabama State broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with a four-run outburst. Niguel Jenkins ignited the rally with a leadoff single before Trey Callaway delivered the game's biggest swing, launching a two-run home run to left field. Later in the inning, the Hornets capitalized on a defensive miscue, plating two additional unearned runs to take a 4-0 lead.
Mississippi Valley State answered in the fifth, scoring two unearned runs to trim the deficit to 4-2. However, Alabama State responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning. After consecutive hit-by-pitches put runners on, Cale Clark came through with a two-RBI single to right-center, extending the lead to 6-2 and regaining momentum.
The Hornets added an insurance run in the eighth inning when Devin Chandler lined an RBI double down the left-field line, pushing the advantage to 7-2 and sealing the outcome.
On the mound, James Peterson (5-0) earned the win in relief, delivering 4.2 shutout innings while allowing just three hits and striking out two to close out the game. Starter Joe Dolinshek worked 4.1 innings, surrendering two runs—both unearned—on seven hits while striking out two.
Offensively, the Hornets were led by Callaway, who went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, while Chandler added three hits and an RBI. Clark contributed two hits and two RBI, and Alex Espaillat also recorded a three-hit performance as Alabama State generated consistent pressure throughout the lineup.
