Hornets Sweep Series with 14-10 win over Alcorn State

LORMAN, Miss. | Alabama State University baseball completed a Southwestern Athletic Conference series sweep with a 14-10 victory over Alcorn State University on Saturday afternoon at McGowan Stadium.

The Hornets closed the regular season at 30-21 overall and 20-10 in SWAC play, reaching the 30 win mark for the seventh time in 10 seasons under Head Coach Jose Vazquez.

Alabama State erased an early deficit with a four-run third inning and later broke the game open with a six-run eighth inning to secure the win.

Alabama State University totaled 12 hits and drew 10 walks in the victory, led by Miguel Oropeza, who finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs. Devin Chandler added three RBI, while Cale Clark drove in two runs and Quentin Jenkins scored three times. Fabian Santana collected three hits and scored twice.

Alcorn State struck first in the opening inning when Jaylyn Bennett doubled home Kanious Davis for a 1-0 lead.

The Hornets answered in the top of the third with four runs. Quentin Jenkins and Fabian Santana reached base before Chandler delivered a two-run double down the left-field line to put Alabama State ahead 2-1. Oropeza followed with an RBI double, and Niguel Jenkins later walked with the bases loaded as another run scored on a wild pitch to extend the advantage to 4-1.

The Braves responded with two runs in the bottom of the third. Bennett tripled home a run before scoring on a balk to trim the Alabama State lead to 4-3.

The Hornets added a run in the fourth inning when Chandler lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Quentin Jenkins for a 5-3 advantage.

Alcorn State cut the deficit to 5-4 in the sixth inning on Chance Jackson's RBI single, but Alabama State answered with three runs in the seventh. Breydon Divine scored on a fielder's choice and throwing error before Clark lined a two-run single to left field to stretch the lead to 8-4.

The decisive inning came in the eighth as Alabama State erupted for six runs. Quentin Jenkins opened the inning with a double before Santana singled and Chandler walked to load the bases. Divine forced in a run with a walk, and Oropeza cleared the bases with a three-run double down the left-field line. Niguel Jenkins later added an RBI double and eventually scored on a wild pitch as the Hornets built a 14-4 lead.

Alcorn State mounted a late rally with two runs in the eighth and four more in the ninth, but Jacob Loeffler recorded the final out to preserve the victory and the series sweep.

Joe Dolinshek earned the win on the mound for Alabama State, improving to 2-2 after allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits with four strikeouts across 5.1 innings. Kanious Davis took the loss for Alcorn State after surrendering four runs over 2.2 innings.

Bennett paced the Braves offensively with a double, a triple, and two RBI, while Davis collected four hits and drove in two runs. Chance Jackson added two RBI for Alcorn State.

Alabama State turns its sights to the 2026 SWAC Baseball Touranment on May 20-24 at Rickwood Field in Birmingham Ala.
