Mirra Riddle of the Alabama State University volleyball team were each recognized by the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) for their performances in the team's four contests this past week, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.
In the second week of action in the 2026 campaign, Clay was named the SWAC Setter of the Week, while Riddle, a junior in her first year with the Hornets, was named SWAC Newcomer of the Week. The duo each collected their first honor of the young season following the team's trip to the Spartan Invitational at USC Upstate, as well as an away match against Gardner-Webb on Saturday.
Clay was effective in her efforts across four matches this past week, totaling 102 set assists across 13 sets for the Lady Hornets. The third-year setter averaged 7.85 assists per set, while only committing three errors - a 97.1 percent success rate. Her best performance came in a four-set outing against UNC Wilmington, as she had 30 assists without an error, adding eight digs, three block assists and a pair of kills in a strong tournament-opening performance.
The reigning SWAC Setter of the Year leads the conference with 7.63 assists per set and is second in the conference with 183 total set assists. Additionally, Clay improved her dig-per-set mark to a career-high 2.17 digs while lifting her average points-per-set season mark to 0.63, another personal best.
Riddle's recognition comes as she has built a strong resume in her first season with Alabama State, collecting 43 digs across 13 sets in four matches over the weekend. The ASU libero averaged 3.31 digs per set, leading the team in the category in all four outings while receiving opposing attacks on a 90 percent success rate. Riddle added eight assists and four service aces to her stellar weekend.
The North Bend, Ore., native found her most success in a 15-dig outing against UNC Wilmington, and a nine-dig, four assist and two ace showing against USC Upstate on the back end of a two-match outing to close out its appearance in its weekend tournament.
Riddle leads all SWAC freshmen with 84 digs (2nd in SWAC), an average of 3.5 digs per set (3rd in SWAC). The North Bend High School product has also excelled in other areas, as she has found success as a server while being another reliable setting option on a strong ASU roster.
Clay, Riddle, and the rest of the Alabama State volleyball team return home this weekend, as it will host the two-day ISTAP Collegiate Cup inside the Joe L. Reed Dunn-Oliver Acadome on Friday, Sept. 11 and Saturday, Sept. 12. Its first opponent, South Carolina State, will face the Hornets at 11 a.m. for the first of six matches in the team's first regular season home action of the year.
