Miles Brandon

Miles A. Brandon joins the Alabama State coaching staff in 2022 as the defensive line coach, bringing a wealth of coaching experience with him.

He has coached 26-plus years on the college level and most recently was at Sul Ross State, a Division III school in Texas, as the defensive line coach. He helped build a defense with 21 freshmen defensive linemen, and recorded a total of 14.5 sacks (65 yards lost) and 34.5 tackles for loss. He also coached an all-conference selection to 58 total tackles and 9.5 tackles for loss, including 4.5 sacks.

Prior to his time at Sul Ross State, he coached from 2016 to 2018 at Hempstead High School where he had four First Team All-District Defensive Linemen in 2016. The line led the team in sacks that season, and he also coached an All-District linebacker in 2017.

Brandon spent time in the SWAC prior to this stop, serving as the defensive line coach and the interim strength and conditioning coach in 2015 at Texas Southern. He helped the Tigers finish fifth in the conference in defense that season, and coached NFL prospect Amir Bloom and First Team All-SWAC selection Derrick Lyles.

From 2005 to 2014, he spent time as the defensive line coach and cooridinated the strength and conditioning program for the football at Prairie View A&M. While there, he helped rebuild the program after the longest losing streak in the nation, with four winning seasons (2007-10) and a SWAC championship in 2009. While there, he helped set a school record for fewest yards by an opponent after holding Edward Waters to minus 35 yards rushing in a game.

While at PVAMU, he coached Jermaine McGhee to a First Team All-SWAC selection in 2008 with 11 sacks before signing with Kansas City and Buffalo in the NFL. In 2009, the defense was ranked third nationally in rushing and total defense, while in 2011 Adrian Hamilton led the nation in sacks with 20.5 before signing as a free agent in the NFL. He also coached Quinton Spears (two-time All-SWAC selection) and Jarvis Reed (Green Bay).
From 2000-03, he was the defensive coordinator at Lane, and in 2001 was promoted to head coach. His defensive line was ranked in the top three in the SIAC in total defense, rush defense, and pass efficiency while in Tennessee.

He has had stops at Morehead State, Troy, Clarion, Urbana, Middletown High School and Springfield South High School.

Brandon has also participated in the NCAA Coaches Academy (2006), and presented at the AFCA Coaches Convention on “Defensive Line Play.” He was also part of the Bill Walsh Internship with Pittsburgh in 2009.

He is a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated.
