Roger Totten returns to Alabama State for his second stint on the Hornets coaching staff. He serves as the assistant head coach and also will oversee the receiving corps.

Totten, a 24-year veteran of the collegiate coaching ranks, rejoins ASU after most recently serving a two-year stretch as the wide receivers coach at Alabama A&M.

A well-respected offensive mind, Totten has held the title of offensive coordinator at several career stops including Mississippi Valley State (2003-07), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1996-98, 1999-2003), Alcorn State (1998-99) and Tuskegee (1995-96).

Totten began his coaching career as a student assistant coach at his alma mater, Mississippi Valley State, followed by his first stint (four years) at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. While at Pine Bluff, Totten coached a variety of positions including running backs, quarterbacks, wide receivers and special teams.

His first tenure at ASU began in the summer of 1992 when he was named the Hornets coach for quarterbacks, wide recievers and special teams. During that time he coached and mentored then Bama State standout and current head coach Reggie Barlow.

Totten then moved on to Tuskegee University, where he earned his first offensive coordinator title. After a season at Tuskegee, he returned to Arkansas-Pine Bluff as the offensive coordinator helping lead the Lions to a No. 3 total offense ranking in the SWAC in 1997. Following two seasons with UAPB, Totten joined Alcorn State’s staff as the offensive coordinator, where he led the Braves to a No. 2 total offense ranking.

He returned to Pine Bluff the next season adding assistant head coaching duties to his offensive coordinator’s role and guided the Lions offense to the top spot on the SWAC rushing charts in 2000.

During his career, Totten-led offenses have also ranked among the SWAC leaders in red zone performance and scoring. Totten has demonstrated a strong ability to evaluate and attract student athletes, serving as recruiting coordinator at both Alcorn and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Totten earned his bachelor’s degree in health, physical education and recreation from Mississippi Valley State in 1987, and holds master’s degrees in both sports administration (Grambling State, 1992) and secondary education (Alcorn State, 1999).

A member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Totten and his wife, Willette, have two children, Shun and Ranashia.
