LaToya Clark

LaToya Clark will be entering her 10th season as Alabama State associate head volleyball coach for the 2023 season.

Nicknamed “Coach Toy,” Clark has offered her specialized knowledge of the setter position and has worked heavily in the recruiting process and organization of team affairs.

During her time with the Lady Hornets, she has helped the Lady Hornets to five conference titles (2014, 2016-19), secured 20-plus wins in four of those seasons, and the Lady Hornets earned the SWAC Setter of the Year four times. She was also instrumental in a string of 44 consecutive conference matches won by Alabama State.

Last season, she helped the Lady Hornet to yet another conference championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. She also helped coach five players who were named all-conference.

In 2018, Clark helped the Lady Hornets land four on the all-conference team including Candace Martin (co-SWAC Player of the Year), and helped the team to the NCAA Tournament to face top-seeded Stanford. During the 2017 season, the Lady Hornets placed five on the all-conference team and won two of the major awards in Ni’yesha Brown (Offensive Player of the Year) and Kori Kutsch (Setter of the Year) before earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

In 2016 the Lady Hornets placed six players on the All-SWAC teams, while finishing undefeated for the first time in conference play under Lucas-White.

Not only did the Lady Hornets place six players on the all-conference team, they also won four of the major conference awards. Jamie Coleman was named the Libero of the Year (First Team All-SWAC), Justus Tuiolosega was named Setter of the Year (First Team All-SWAC), Ni’yesha Brown the Newcomer of the Year (First Team All-SWAC) and Bayle Bennett the Freshman of the Year (Second Team). The 2015 campaign was her first season as the top assistant to coach Penny Lucas-White after serving as one of the two assistant coaching positions in 2014.

Prior to ASU, the Tallahassee (Fla.) native spent the previous three years as assistant varsity coach and head junior varsity coach at Leon High School.

She has expanded her coaching experience as a camp instructor over the past three summers.

Clark was a decorated four-year volleyball letterman at Jackson State as a three-time team MVP, two-time All-SWAC performer and two-time All-SWAC Tournament performer. She helped lead the Lady Tigers to the 2011 SWAC Championship, the first in program history.

Clark was selected as the Southwestern Athletic Conference Woman of the Year in 2012 and was the conference nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year award for excellence in service, leadership, athletics, and academics.

Clark graduated Magna Cum Laude from Jackson State with a Bachelor’s degree in social work in 2012 and her Master’s in social work from Florida State in 2013. She has one son, Bryson, who turne six in July 2022 and is entering the first grade.
