MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- After traveling on the road for a week, the Alabama State University Lady Hornets returned home and took a captivating 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-18) win over Clark-Atlanta University Tuesday night in Lockhart Gymnasium.
The Lady Hornets took an early lead in the first set, leading the Panthers by as many as nine points. Alabama State (6-17, 0-2 SWAC) had a team hitting percentage of .219, with 41 kills and 18 errors in 105 attacks.
The Hornets were led by junior Althea Russell (Mobile, Ala.) with nine kills, a .412 hitting percentage and two blocks. Senior Jessica Holt (Montgomery, Ala.) added eight kills. Holt only recorded one error in 14 attacks to garnish a team-high .500 hitting percentage, to go with one service ace and two total blocks.
Anna Meinert (Arab, Ala.) led Alabama State with four service aces. Meinert also tallied five kills and 30 assists, while Roselande Cornielle (Dacula, Ga.) led the team on defense with 10 digs. Deidra Byner (Birmingham, Ala.) added nine digs.
Krysta McGowan led Clark-Atlanta with 11 kills while adding a team high of 12 digs on defense. She was followed by LaChelle Sutphen with 10 digs.
The Lady Hornets return to action Friday when they travel to Huntsville to participate in the Betty K. Austin Volleyball Invitational.
