Hornets Fall at Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn.
– The Alabama State University men's basketball team suffered a disappointing 78-42 loss at Belmont Saturday night at the Curb Event Center.

The Hornets playing in their second consecutive road game to open the season slipped to 0-2 on the year while Belmont improved to 2-2 following its home debut.

Tramayne Moorer scored 12 points to lead the ASU offense that also got 11 points from Tramaine Butler. For the second straight outing, Ivory White led the Hornets on the glass with eight rebounds.

The Bruins placed three players in double figures led by Keaton Belcher's 17-point performance. Scott Sanders scored 13 for BU and Mark Hedgepeth tallied a double-double finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Belmont jumped out to a quick 9-0 start and never looked back as Bama State struggled on offense shooting just 23 percent (13-56) from the floor in the game.

The Bruins built as much as a 21-point lead in the first half before a late 9-2 run by the Hornets trimmed the halftime deficit to 37-23.

Belmont opened the second half with back-to-back three-pointers to regain the momentum. The Bruins continued to extend their lead over the next several minutes of play en route to the win.

For the game, the Bruins made 27 of 53 shots (50.9 percent) and hit nine treys compared to just four for the Hornets. Belmont also earned a 47-33 advantage on the glass. ASU's defense was able to cause some problems forcing 18 turnovers by the Bruins.

Alabama State hosts Columbus State University Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the team's home opener. The game marks the Hornets lone home contest in their first nine games.
