Sluggish Play Costly in Hornets Loss at Arkansas

Final Boxscore

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.
-- Alabama State University senior Menji Mundadi posted his second consecutive 20-point performance but it wasn't enough as the Hornets struggled from the floor for much of the game in a disappointing 76-51 road loss to Arkansas Wednesday night at Bud Walton Arena.

Mundadi finished with 21 points including four three-pointers as the lone ASU player in double digits. Fellow senior Tramayne Moorer just missed a double-double in the contest scoring nine points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds.

Mike Washington led a trio of Razorback players in double figures with 22 points including 15 in the first half while also pulling down a team best eight boards.

Both offenses struggled to start the game as the two teams combined for five turnovers in the games first three minutes. Arkansas scored the first basket and built a 7-2 lead as the Hornets failed to make a field goal until Mundadi drilled a trey at the 14:57 mark of the first period.

Mundadi connected on another three-pointer minutes later to pull ASU to within one point, 9-8, with 12:52 to play. However, the Razorbacks answered with a 14-4 run over the next six minutes of play to build a double-digit advantage. Arkansas held a 36-19 halftime advantage after closing the half with an 11-3 spurt.

The Hornets went 5-for-29 (17 percent) from the floor in the first period with all five baskets coming from long distance. Mundadi made three with Sekani Milligen and Robert Sanders each making one.

Tramaine Butler made ASU's first two-point field goal at the 18:55 mark of the second half. The Razorbacks would push their lead to 20 points five minutes into the final period following a 10-3 surge and then maintain a comfortable margin as the two squads played even over the remainder of the contest.

ASU improved to 36 percent (11-30) shooting in the second half and finished the game at 27 percent compared to a 52 percent performance by the Razorbacks. A much bigger Arkansas line-up also posted a 45-34 advantage in rebounding, but ASU owned a slight 12-11 edge on the offensive glass.

After playing the last five games on the road, Alabama State next hosts cross-town foe AUM Saturday at the Acadome at 7 p.m.
