MONTGOMERY -- Brandon Brooks and Andrew Hayles paced a balanced scoring attack that lifted Alabama State University to an 80-67 win over Mississippi Valley State Monday night at the Acadome.

The win kept the Hornets (13-8 overall, 10-1) a half game ahead of Jackson State in Southwestern Athletic Conference standings. Jackson State (10-13, 9-2) beat Southern 67-55. ASU has won 11 of its last 12 games after starting the season 2-7.

The Hornets shot a blistering 58 percent from the field as four players scored 10 points or more in a balanced scoring attack.

Brooks and Hayles led ASU with 16 points each. Wesley Jones added 14 points and seven rebounds and Roland Fitch scored 10 points. Chief Kickingstallionsims scored 9 points, grabbed three rebounds and had two blocked shots.

ASU's defense, which has allowed the second fewest total points in the SWAC, limited the Delta Devils to a dismal 25 percent shooting in the first half, enabling the Hornets to take a 36-26 lead at the break.

Mississippi Valley State cut the deficit to six points with 16:39 to play, but were held scoreless for more than three minutes as the Hornets stretched their lead to 19 points.

The Delta Devils (3-21, 3-8), who have lost four straight, finished 22-for-69 from the field.
