Montgomery — Alabama State University scored a season high 87 points as the Hornets routed the Alabama A&M Bulldogs 87-43 Saturday at the ASU Acadome.
More than 5,200 fans watched the Southwestern Athletic Conference's top men's team take control early and then shoot a blistering 53 percent from the field to win easily. It was the fifth straight win for the Hornets, and 12th win in the last 13 games.
The victory kept the Hornets (14-8, 11-1 in SWAC) one game ahead of Jackson State (11-13, 10-2).
Roland Fitch came off the bench to lead the Hornets with 17 points and five rebounds. Tremaine Butler scored 16 points and had four steals.
The score was tied only twice the whole game before the Hornets ran away to a 27-point halftime lead, 43-16. ASU continued its dominance in the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs 44-27.
A&M was lead by John Smith with 11 points and seven rebounds.
ASU heads to Baton Rouge, La., Saturday to play Southern University (6-18, 6-6) and then travels to Lorman, Miss., for a Monday night, Feb. 23, game against Alcorn State (3-9, 5-20).
