The sounds of whistles blowing, balls bouncing and sneakers squeaking soon will fill the air at the Alabama State University Acadome when head basketball coaches
Lewis Jackson and
Freda Freeman-Jackson welcome participants to their annual summer camps.
The Jacksons are more than dual head ASU basketball team coaches, they are also husband and wife, and their enthusiasm and expertise for the sport of basketball is apparent and contagious, said
Monique Holland, ASU's athletic director.
“Who wouldn't want their kids to train under two of the best basketball coaches in our conference,” said Holland, who also played basketball at ASU.
“The Jacksons' insight into the mechanics of how to play the game is apparent and could prove to provide valuable lessons to help a child's game,” she said.
Lewis Jackson, the Southwest Athletic Conference's Coach of the Year in 2009, will hold his camp June 8-11. Both day and overnight camper options are available for children ages 8-18.
Jackson guided ASU's Hornets to the SWAC regular season and tournament championships this season, earning the team a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
A former collegiate standout at ASU, Jackson played basketball professionally across the world before entering the coaching ranks.
Many tri-county Alabama locals remember him as a stand-out, star prep player, at Wetumpka High School.
Jackson said his talented camp staff will work with players of various ages and skill levels to develop and improve their games during the summer camp session.
