JACKSON, Miss. -- Garrison Johnson hit a pair of free throws with three seconds remaining to give Jackson State a 63-62 come-from-behind win over Alabama State Wednesday night at the Williams Assembly Center.
The Tigers (4-10, 2-0 SWAC) rallied from a 10-point second half deficit and outscored ASU (4-9, 1-1) 19-8 over the final seven minutes of the game to secure the victory.
Menji Mundadi, who scored 20 points for the Hornets, had given ASU a one-point lead with 12 seconds remaining after making two free throws.
Tramayne Moorer finished with 16 points for ASU including 14 in the second half and
Byron Walker chipped in 14 points in the loss.
Johnson led all scorers with 29 points and made 14 of 16 free throw attempts in the contest.
Jackson State opened the game with a 7-2 run and kept the lead until Mundadi drilled back-to-back three-pointers knotting the score at 18-18 with 7:45 left in the first half.
ASU then scored the next five points and maintained an advantage for most of the remainder of the half. The Tigers evened the score in the final minute, but a jumper by
Byron Walker just before the buzzer gave the Hornets a 33-31 halftime lead.
After a sluggish start to the second half, Alabama State scored nine straight points and held Jackson State scoreless for six minutes of play in building a nine-point advantage, 46-37, with 10:12 left in the game. ASU held a 10-point lead (54-44) following a free throw by Mundadi at the 7:13 mark.
The Tigers turned up their defensive intensity using full-court pressure to slowly chip away at the Hornets lead. JSU trimmed its deficit to just four points with five minutes left and eventually tied the score at 60 with 1:58 remaining setting up the furious final moments.
Alabama State now returns home for three straight games beginning Saturday against Mississippi Valley State at 5 p.m.
