ASU Men Earns First Win of the Season Over Kennesaw State

Head Coach Lewis Jackson

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State Men's basketball team stunned Kennesaw State 74-59 in front of 1,571 fans at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.  It was the home-opener for the Hornets who started the 2010-11 season on a three-game road trip.

The game did not start out well for ASU as Kennesaw State opened a 9-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game.  The Hornets finally begin to score some points but still trailed 17-9 midway through the first half.  ASU then went on an 18-9 run that gave ASU a 27-17 lead and the  Hornets went into the locker room with a 33-26 lead.

ASU did not let up in the second half, shooting 52 percent from the field as they outscored the visitors 41-33.  In fact, the Hornets had their best shooting game of the season, finishing the game shooting 47.3 percent (26-55) from the field and knocking down six of their 15 (40%) three-point shots.

Tramaine Butler played in his first game of the season and provided a spark for ASU.  The junior from Detroit scored 20 points in his debut knocking down eight of his 15 shots.

Ivan Johnson came off the bench to chip in with 13 points and Stephawn Brown scored 11.  Patrick Davis had a solid game scoring eight points and grabbing a game-high eight rebounds.  He also had three blocked shots and three steals.

“This was a totally different team than the one we took on the road.”  Head coach Lewis Jackson said.  “We worked hard in practice once we returned from our road trip and it showed”.

ASU forced 17 KSU turnovers turning many of those into fast break points.  Forward Kenderek White missed his second consecutive game as he continues to recover from an injury.

Spencer Dixon led KSU with a game-high 25 points.  He hit seven of his 12 field goal attempts, including three of five from beyond the three-point line.  He also hit eight of nine at the free throw line.

Marketih Cummings was the only other double-digit scorer.  He had 15 points and also had seven rebounds.

The win was the first for ASU and moves their record to 1-3.  Kennesaw State started the season with two quick wins, including an upset win over Georgia Tech, but the loss to ASU was their second consecutive and drops them to 2-2.

ASU will again hit the road and travel to Chicago where they will face Loyola University on Monday.  Tipoff is set for 7 pm.
