Alabama State Soccer Reaches SWAC Semifinals for First Time in History
PINE BLUFF, Ark.--Alabama State's double overtime victory highlighted day one action at the SWAC Soccer Tournament. The Hornets defeated Texas Southern, 2-1 to reach the SWAC Soccer Semifinals for the first time in history.
The score was knotted a 0-0 going into the final 15 minutes of the second half before Alabama State's Danielle Miller broke the scoreless tie with an assisted goal at the 75:41 mark. Texas Southern responded with a goal of their own at 80:45 and the score remained 1-1, forcing the game into two overtimes. Lenna Lamas scored the game-winning goal in the 117th minute, giving Alabama State the 2-1 victory over Texas Southern.
?We made a little history, this is the first time the program has advanced in the tournament,? said Alabama State head coach Jodie Smith. ?We made it interesting for ourselves and for everyone else.?
Alabama State moves on to face Jackson State in the semifinals at 1 PM on Friday. Jackson State advanced to the SWAC semifinals after defeating Southern, 2-0 in the second match of the day.
In other action on day one of the SWAC Soccer Tournament, host Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the No. 1 seed in the west, defeated No. 4 Alabama A&M 2-0. No. 2 Mississippi Valley State advanced to the SWAC semifinals after downing No. 3 Prairie View A&M, 2-1. Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State will battle in a 3:30 PM semifinal match on Friday.
