FINAL STATS
MONTOMERY, Ala. – Trailing 9-0 to start the game, ASU scored their first basket at the 9:53 mark of the first half and went on a 16-2 run to lead 16-11 with 5:40 to go before halftime. Belmont however went on a run of their own out scoring ASU 17-6 to lead 28-22 at halftime.
The Bruins entered the contest with an 8-2 record suffering losses to a pair of SEC schools in Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
It all started with the hornets missing their first five shots. The Bruins were only able to manufacture nine points of their own through the first 10:47 of the first half which is what created room for ASU to spark a huge run before halftime.
“We came out early and could not make any shots and we also rushed a few attempts which caused us to get behind”. Head coach Lewis Jackson said. “I thought we played extremely hard after we regained our composure but it just wasn't enough to beat a quality Belmont team”.
Belmont's leading scorer in Mick Hedgepeth was held to only three points going 0-6 from the field on the night. “We thought we had a really good defensive scheme against an opponent that came in scoring a lot of points”. Coach Jackson said. “Our biggest problem is scoring and finding ways to get easy baskets”
Belmont's J.J. Mann led all scorers with 15 points. Ian Clark entered the game as Belmont's leading scorer and chipped in with 12 points, all on three-point shots.
Ivory White led ASU with his second consecutive double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Stephawn Brown led ASU in scoring with 11 points. Chris Duncan Chipped in eight points to go along with seven boards.
Belmont moves to 9-2 after the win and ASu falls to 2-9. The Hornets will travel to Dallas to face Southern Methodist University on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 7 pm.
