“I thought we played with tremendous effort tonight especially at the start of the game,” said ASU head coach
Lewis Jackson. “During halftime, we talked about continuing to play with intensity in the second half and I thought for the most part we did that as well. It was nice to be able to give all our guys some minutes in the game. Hopefully, this is just another building step for us as we head into the final few weeks before the tournament.”
The Hornets scored the first 11 points en route to blazing a 20-point lead (24-4) with 13:14 to play in the opening half. Alcorn did not score its first point until a free throw at the 17:16 mark and its only field goal in the first eight minutes came with 16:26 on the clock.
Mundadi scored 10 points during ASU's opening surge that included baskets by seven different players. The Bama State defense forced eight turnovers during the run and limited Alcorn to just 16 percent shooting (1-for-6).
The ASU offense, which shot a blistering 60 percent from the field in the first half, continued to run on all cylinders maintaining a 20-point advantage for much of the opening stanza. Mundadi's fourth three-pointer of the half gave the Hornets their largest lead, 42-16, at the 3:13 mark.
The Braves answered with an 8-0 run of their own but ASU closed with the final seven points of the period including a trey by Walker at the buzzer to take a 49-24 lead into the halftime break. The 49 points was the most scored by the Hornets in a half this season.
