ASU Soccer hits the Road

Montgomery, Ala. – The Alabama State soccer team is set to make a two game road swing in Louisiana and Arkansas this weekend. ASU will travel to face Grambling Friday, October 14 and will look to compete against Arkansas Pine-Bluff on Sunday, October 16.

The Lady Hornets (1-13-1 overall/ 0-2-1 SWAC) is coming off a motivational division game, when they were able to hold last year's Southwestern Athletic Conference Champions (Jackson State) to a 1-1 tie in double overtime last Sunday.

“We showed that we could play with the better team in the conference. Everybody is grouped right there together. No one team has beaten the other in the conference by more than one goal so far this season, so if we can match the intensity that we played with this past weekend, we'll have a chance this weekend,” said Head Coach Jodie Smith.

Grambling (0-11) is coming off loses from Mississippi Valley State (1-2) and Alcorn State (0-3) this past weekend.

“I'm encouraged that we're starting to address some of the issues that have continued to haunt us. Being in conference play, whether it's a division game or non-division game, we have to take it as a chance to improve and work forward. We have to give the same focus and attention for non-division games as we do to the division games,” stated Coach Smith.

UAPB (7-4-1) has won four straight in the last five games, including a win over SWAC Western Division foe Grambling State.

“They won the conference two years ago. They have a good team and it will be a very tough game at their place but Jackson State beat them handily last year,” said Coach Smith. “Our ladies see what can happen if we play aggressive on defense and score points.”

The game is slated for 4 p.m. in Grambling, La. on Friday. On Sunday the match is set to start at 1 p.m. in Pine Bluff, Ark.
