The Alabama State volleyball team will travel to Alcorn for a conference match-up Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Lorman, Miss.
“I think our young ladies are getting better every time we play,” stated head coach Penny Lucas-White. “I am looking forward to this match because it will be the first time that we have seen Alcorn this season, so this will be another team that we will have to be mentally prepared for. With this match I am hoping that we improve our overall record as well as in the conference.”
The Lady Hornets enters Tuesday's contest with an 11-18 overall record and a 2-2 mark in league play. Alabama State fell to Alabama A&M 3-1 last week.
Alabama State's Maya Bell is only 65 kills away from 500 career kills. The Moreno Valley, Calif. Native has 435 kills which she is the second in the school's history for the most career kills in a season dating back to 1998. Bell has the team-best .204 hitting percentage, while serving up a team-high 49 service aces.
Junior Roselande Corneille is second on the team with 228 kill and a 2.38 kills per game average. Corneille is second on the team in digs with 227 and has recorded 17 blocks. Senior Asia Manning has 147 kills with 17 service aces, while freshman Luiza Griz has a team-best 263 digs with 2.83 digs per game average and 46 service aces to add to her numbers. Senior Ana Pego has 846 assists with 158 digs and 14 service aces.
Alcorn enters the match with a 2-22 overall record and a 0-4 mark in SWAC action, after falling to the University of New Orleans 3-1 last week. Shaquanda Hollis leads the team with 105 kills and a 1.72 kills per game average. Stephanie Williams lead the Lady Braves at the net with 58 blocks (33 solo) and a 0.87 blocks per game average. Courtney Small has 92 kills with 82 digs and 18 blocks. Monique Ransom has handed out 287 assists with a team-high 28 service aces.
Alabama State has a 22-9 all-time record against Alcorn, with their last win coming in 1997, defeating the Lady Hornets 3-2.
