ASU’s Defense holds JSU to a 1-1 tie

Montgomery, Ala. – The Alabama State soccer team used great defensive efforts to hold the defending Southwestern Athletic Conference Champions Jackson State to a single goal as the two teams left Hornets Stadium on Sunday, October 9 in a (1-1) tie.

In the first period the match was scoreless due to great defensive efforts from both teams.

Fifteen minutes (60:26) in the second period, ASU's junior midfielder Lenna Lamas hit the back of the nets off a free-kick to score the Lady Hornets first and only goal of the match.

With a little less than 13 minutes left in the match (77:23), Brittany Renner found the back of the nets to score Jackson State's only goal on the afternoon, which tied the game at 1-all.

“We stepped in the right direction today,” said Coach Jodie Smith. “The girls now know we can compete, knowing that JSU won the SWAC Championship last season.”

ASU's freshman goalkeeper Kylee Hathaway had five saves on the day.

“We faced a lot of adversity today and will try to build from this,” said Coach Smith. “Hopefully this game will be motivation for the ladies moving forward.”

The Lady Hornets will be on the road for their next three matches in conference play before coming back home to host Prairie View in its final game of the regular season at Hornets Stadium.

Alabama State will travel to Grambling, La. to face Gambling State University at 4 p.m. on Friday, October 14, 2011.
