Foughal’s Game-Altering Strike on Thursday Nets Her First Conference Award

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Midfielder Lamya Foughal of the Alabama State University women's soccer team was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Newcomer of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.

In a game that was set to be determined by the strength of the midfield play, Foughal, a junior transfer from Southwestern Illinois, stepped up to the plate and executed when the Lady Hornets needed it most. Attempting her third shot on goal of the year, the Nîmes, France, native converted her second shot of the game in the 46th minute, firing it past a diving Prairie View A&M keeper to secure a 1-0 victory over the Panthers.

She put both of her shots on goal for the second time this year, this time doing so in just 32 minutes of action. Her midfield teammates continued to hold strong through the remainder of the second half, weathering a number of tries throughout the period and a pair of extremely close goal attempts by the opposition in the team's first shutout victory of the year.

The Lycée Ernest Hemingway Prep School graduate has started eight of her 10 appearances on the season, putting nearly 45 percent of her shots on target in her 530 minutes of action.

Foughal and the Hornets (1-9-2, 1-2-1 SWAC) have four more games before postseason play begins – first on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. at Texas Southern in Houston, Texas, and then on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at the ASU Soccer Complex.
