Men's Basketball Continues Hot Streak
Baton Rouge, La. – The Alabama State men's basketball team won their fourth in a row Saturday at Southern. The final from the F.G. Clark Activity Center was 63-50.
ASU closed out the first half with a 9-0 run leading 34-28 at the break. Midway through that run the team's leading scorer Tramayne Moorer took a hard fall with 1:58 left in the first half. Moorer did not return. He finished with nine points and three rebounds in 13 minutes of action.
The victory for ASU (10-16, 7-6) gave them their second road win of the season. The four game winning streak also marked the longest streak of the season for the Hornets. Southern (4-22, 3-11) suffered their seventh loss in a row.
“It was a must win for us today”. Head coach Lewis Jackson said. “We were able to put together a small streak at home so I was anxious to see how we would respond on the road”. Coach Jackson stated.
Alabama State is now above .500 in the SWAC for the first time since opening the conference season at 2-1. ASU led 51-34 with 7:52 left in the game. Southern was able to cut the margin down to 10 with 3:23 left to play. Two sets of free throws by Jeff Middlebrooks and Ivory White increased the Hornet's lead to 63-49.
“We talked about being patient on defense and offense”. Coach Jackson stated. “Our goal was to force them to take difficult shots and not give them easy trips to the free throw line”. Coach Jackson mentioned.
Kenderek Washington led all scorers with 12 points. Tramaine Butler chipped in 10. Quinton Doggett led Southern with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Monday Alabama State faces Alcorn State in Lorman, Ms Monday. Tip-off is at 7:30 pm.
