Lady Hornets Post Victory Over Southern and Falls to Nicholls State

Maya Bell recorded her career best 26 kills, as Alabama State volleyball team won a 3-2 decision over Southern (25-21, 25-17, 20-25, 23-25, 15-10).  And fell 3-0 to Nicholls State (25-16, 27-25, 25-9) in the final day of the Nicholls State Tournament. 

 

Also posting double-figure kill totals in the match against Southern for the Lady Hornets were Asia Manning with 13 and Roselande Corneille with 12. 

In set one, Alabama State led by as many as eight points (10-2), until Southern capsulated within a point (11-10) off of ASU's mistakes.  After an ASU timeout the Lady Hornets went on a 4-0 run to surpass the jags 20-16.  Alabama State continued to build its lead to earn the game point off an assist from Tiffany Dillard to Bell that ended the set 25-21.

Set two saw Southern take a three point lead until the set saw five ties with the final tie knotted at 12-12.  ASU then jumped out to a 20-14 lead never looking back taking set two 25-17.

Sets three and four were taken by Southern.  Alabama State took the final set 15-10 to win the match improving to a 3-8 overall record, while Southern fell to 0-8 on the season.

Head coach Penny Lucas White said, “We did a good job all around, offensively and defensively as we fought a hard fought battle against a good team.  Our goal will be to continue to keep working hard as much as we can.”

In match two of the final match of the tournament against Nicholls State, ASU wasn't able to carry the same momentum into this game falling 3-0.

Bell led ASU with 14 kills and tallied 13 digs, while teammate Corneille totaled nine kills and 12 digs in the loss.

Bell was nominated to the Nicholls State All-Tournament Team for her performance tallying a total of 56 kills over three matches.

 

The Lady Hornets will return to the court on Tuesday, September 13 as they face Clark-Atlanta at 6 p.m. EST in Atlanta, Ga.
