Robinson Leads ASU Past Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga.—Alabama State went on the road today to face Savannah State in their final non-conference game of the season and came away with a 3-0 win (25-12, 25-17, 25-11) over the Lady Tigers.
 
Anniiya Robinson had a career-high 15 kills to lead the Lady Hornets and Rachel Smith added 13.  Brooke Beasley had 37 assists and Luiza Griz added 10 digs.
 
ASU hit .482 in the three-set game while holding Savannah State to .081.
 
ASU started the game with a 25-12 win in the first set as the Lady Hornets hit a season and and single set-high .619.  Smith led the way with five kills and Amber Bennett had four.  As a team, ASU had 14 kills in 21 attacks and only one error.
 
The set had five ties, but ASU was able to go on a 3-0 run with the score even at seven and pulled away from there.
 
ASU was able to push the lead out to 2-0 with a 25-17 win in the second set.  Again, the Lady Hornets had a solid set finishing with a .429 hitting percentage as they had 20 kills in 35 attacks with five errors.  Robinson had a huge set with 11 kills.  It was the most individual kills in a single set for ASU this season.  Smith added another five kills.
 
The Lady Hornets put the game away with a 25-11 third set win.  It was a set the Lady Hornets never trailed in.  They jumped out to an 8-2 lead and never looked back.
 
“We played really well on the offensive side of the court,” Head Coach Penny Lucas-White said.  “I thought we ran our set plays and were able to finish those today.”
 
“We are going into practice this week looking to build on what we got done today and to get ready for these last few weeks of the season facing the rest of our conference season.  Even though we played well today, we did not play perfect and we continue to have a lot of hitting errors.  We have to work on getting better this week.”
 
With the win the Lady Hornets move to 5-22 overall while Savannah State falls to 0-26.
 
ASU hits the road for games this week at Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley.  Alcorn's game will be Thursday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.  The game will be shown live on SWAC TV.  ASU and MVSU will play Friday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m.
