The Alabama State University soccer team is set to host the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes Friday, October 26 at 4 p.m. in a Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division showdown at the ASU Soccer Complex.
“Every year, I have allowed the seniors to run the end of the season practice” head coach
Jodie Smith said. “Our theme this week has been to really lighten the load. We know that there are a lot of nagging things that's been bothering the girls lately, so we wanted to back off but not too much that we couldn't stay focused on the task at hand, and that is to finish the season with victories this weekend.”
This is a crucial game for both ASU and MVSU. It will decide the standings in the SWAC Eastern division for the conference tournament, which will be held November 1-4 in Alexandria, La.
“Well Alabama A&M helped us out a little bit this weekend by knocking off Jackson State on the road, so we really control our own destiny with two wins this weekend,” said Smith. Friday and Sunday will be very challenging for us, so we're ready to see what happens.”
The Lady Hornets (6-7-2 overall/ 1-1 SWAC) are coming off a huge 3-2 victory over the Southern Jaguars on Sunday. After scoring consecutive goals, which included the game-winning goal for ASU Sunday at A.W. Mumford Stadium, sophomore forward
Alexandria Cannon is now leading the team and the SWAC in points (20), goals (8), and game-winning goals (3). Cannon is ranked second in the conference in shots (43) and assists (4).
MVSU (5-8-2/1-0-1) defeated Grambling 1-0 on the road this past Sunday. The Devilettes has won five of their past seven games and tied the other two contests of the seven.
