Hornets Fall to Talented Gators

The opening tip at Florida
Box Score

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Bobby Brown and Joshua Freelove combined to score 26 points, but it was not nearly enough as the Hornets fell at Florida 84-35.

The Gators had four players reach double digits led by Kenny Boynton's 22 points.  Erick Murphy scored 15, Mike Rosario had 14 and Patric Young added 12 as Florida shot 48 percent from the field.

The taller and more physical Gators (1-0) also out rebounded ASU 50-30 with 35 of those were on the offensive end.  Florida's vaunted defense also forced 19 turnovers which turned into 29 points.

“We brought a bunch of freshmen in here to face the number 10 team in the nation so we knew it would be an uphill battle,” Head Coach Lewis Jackson said.  “They do a very good job of getting into you and taking you out of your offense and they did an outstanding job of that tonight.”

Brown led ASU with 14 points, scoring all of his points in the second half.  At one point he scored 10 straight points and 13 out of 14.  He also had a team-high six rebounds and added a blocked shot.

Freelove, who's three pointer at the 16:40 mark was ASU's first points of the game, scored nine in the second half for Alabama State.

ASU shot 32 percent (10-31) in the second half and 21 percent from the field for the game.  Alabama State hit four of their 20 three point attempts and hit seven of 10 at the free throw line.

“What we were trying to do was build and find some positives and then we couldn't throw it in the ocean.  They were so much bigger and stronger than we were.  We just struggled trying to get into our offense and also trying to defend them both on the outside and around the basket.”

The Hornets return to action at Central Florida, Tuesday Nov. 13 at 6 p.m.

“We just have to go out and play to get better,” Jackson said.  “It is the beginning of the season schedule and we always play a brutal preconference schedule.  It is just what we do.  This year we brought in a very young team and this very young team is taking a prominent role.  In the past we have had older players and the younger guys had to come in and compete
