Iowa State Defeats Women's Basketball 86-47

Box Score Hollie Christofferson scored 21 points and teammate Chelsea Poppens added 20 in leading 39th ranked Iowa State to a 86-47 win over Alabama State women's basketball team during the final game of the Cyclone Challenge Sunday afternoon.

“We knew coming into this game that it was going to be a tough match up for us,” said head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson.   “Especially with their team having players that are 5-9, 6-7, 6-4, 5-10 and 6-3, so we played a lot of “Bigs” in order to match up with them.”

With the win, Iowa improves to 9-1 overall.  Alabama State falls to 2-9.

“The girls worked really hard,” Freeman-Jackson stated.  “Again we didn't play well in the first half, but during the second half I think we put forth a better effort.  The girls really, really jelled together and did some good things offensively as well as defensively.”

Christofferson finished the game 7-10 from the field and 4-6 from the three-point line.  She was also 3-3 from the free throw line.  Chrisofferson finished with nine rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Alabama State was led in scoring by Ashley Jones (11).  Brittney Howard led the Lady Hornets in rebounding with seven.

The Cyclones out-rebounded the Lady Hornets 43-37, and made 27 points off of ASU turnovers.  Alabama State committed 30 fouls to Iowa's 12 shooting 34-39 from the free throw line averaging 87 percent.

In the first half, Iowa State jumped out to a 12 point lead with 11:06 left behind Nakiya Smith's five points.  The Cyclones would eventually take a 29 point lead, 43-14 with 3:27 remaining as Jasmine Peeples hit a jumper in the paint.  From this point, Iowa State outscored Alabama State 8-2 and took a 51-16 lead at the half.

In the second half, Iowa State outscored Alabama State 13-2 in the first six minutes to take a 65-18 advantage as Jones hit a jumper with 14:00 left in the game.

This was the final preseason game for the Lady Hornets as they will play host to Jackson State in the New Year to begin conference play on Wednesday night, January 2 at 5:30 p.m. at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

“I really feel good about going into the game against Jackson State on Wednesday, because the way we played tonight is what I really wanted to see.  Although we lost the game there were times that I saw some continuity and the girls playing as a team.  I was really impressed with how we finished the game.”
