Men's Basketball Looks For Win at Prairie View

HOUSTON, Texas—Alabama State University (10-17/7-8 SWAC) will look to get back into the win column when they play their regular season road finale at Prairie View A&M University (12-16/8-7 SWAC) Monday, Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the William Nicks Building on the campus of Prairie View A&M University.

The Hornets will look to seniors Tramaine Butler and Ivory White along with junior Philip Crawford to help get them back on the winning track and to also help them build momentum as they look towards the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament which begins March 7 in Garland, Texas.

Butler recently became the 27th player in ASU men's basketball history to reach the 1,000 career point milestone.  He leads ASU in scoring at over 11 points per game.  White is one of the top all-around players in the game and averages almost 10 points and over six rebounds per game.  Crawford also averages over 10 points per game and over five rebounds per game.

ASU will look to avenge an earlier 64-57 loss to Prairie View A&M back on Jan. 26th.  Louis Munks led PVAMU's effort with 15 points and Jourdan DeMuynck added 12.

Butler led ASU with a game-high 19 points while Crawford added 14.  White added nine points.

Munks leads PVAMU in scoring averaging 9.9 points per game, but his average jumps up to 13.4 points per game in conference action.  DeMunyck is averaging 9.6 points per game.

The two teams are battling for the third or fourth place position heading into the conference tournament.  PVAMU holds a one-game lead and presently stand in third place with the Hornets in the fourth spot, since second-place Southern University will not be in the conference tournament.

“We feel at this stage we have seen all of the teams and seen several of them twice,” head coach Lewis Jackson said.  “We feel we can beat any of the teams in the league and it just comes down to us taking care of the basketball and to do the things that are going to allow us to win the games.”

“Prairie View is another challenge.  They are athletic and very aggressive on defense and you just have to take advantage of the opportunities and use their aggression against them.”
