Hornets Tennis Teams Host Home Opener

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State men's and women's tennis teams are set to play their home opener beginning at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 against Jacksonville State at Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center. On Saturday, Feb. 11, the Hornets and Lady Hornets will face Kennesaw State at 8 a.m. and then face intra-state rival Alabama A&M at 3:30 p.m.

“Well it's nice the kids can play three matches and they don't have to travel,” ASU head coach Anuk Christiansz said. “I like to play tough matches and play teams that are going to play us to the max. That's what this weekend is really about. It makes the team better and them tougher continuing on as the season progresses. It makes the program better, long-term and short-term it's always good to play good teams, especially at home.”

Alabama State men's and women's teams (0-7) are coming off losses to Mercer University and are looking to receive better results this weekend.

“Last week was our first match and we were just trying to get back into the swing of tournament and match play,” said Christiansz. “On the girl's side, we played down a player due to injury and we may have to play down a player again this week. On the guy's side, I think we competed well. I think this week we'll have a better showing. We need to play in about two-three matches to get back in the groove of things, being that a lot of the guys haven't played in tournaments and/or match play in about eight months. I think everyone played well and that's all I ask.”
