GARLAND, Texas—Just like the previous two regular season games between these two teams, it went down to the wire, and also took an extra period, but the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (11-21) defeated Alabama State University (12-19) 60-56 in overtime to end the Hornets season.
ASU led for most of the game and held their largest lead at 47-37 with seven minutes left in the game, but an old problem that has surfaced in almost each game this season popped up, as ASU only scored four points over the final seven minutes. UAPB used ASU's cold spell and rallied to send the game into overtime on a Savalace Townsend layup with three seconds left in the game.
Once in overtime, UAPB kept the momentum and Lazabian Jackson's three pointer with 1:55 left gave UAPB their largest lead at 57-52.
The Hornets rallied to close it to 57-56 on two
Philip Crawford free throws with 37 left, but the Hornets would not score again as UAPB hit three free throws to close out the game.
Tramaine Butler ended his career with another strong performance as he finished with a game-high 18 points and completed a double-double with 10 rebounds. Crawford also hit in double digits finishing with 13 points.
Anthony Price, playing his best game of the season, scored a career-high nine points and had three assists with only one turnover in 31 minutes of action.
Ryan Watts came off the bench to score nine.
Mitchell Anderson scored 16 to lead UAPB and Daniel Broughton scored 13 before fouling out. Townsend came into the game the leading scorer in the conference and the Hornets did a good job of bottling him up, but his late layup sent the game into overtime. He finished the game with 11 points, more than five points below his average.
Neither team shot the ball well as UAPB finished the game shooting 38 percent and the Hornets only 30 percent. ASU out rebounded UAPB 41-37, but could only knock down 15 of their 24 free throws (63%), and that includes only going four of 11 in the second half.
“It was a tough ball game and I thought we did a good job of controlling the tempo for the most part until the last five minutes of regulation,” head coach
Lewis Jackson said. “They got going and made it a tough ball game. We missed some free throws down the stretch and we made several bad plays that allowed them to get the ball back and get to the basket and they were able to make a big play and send the game into overtime.”
“The momentum shifted going into overtime and they made some shots and we missed some shots and they were able to put it away. We had our opportunities when they had a two or three point lead we missed some chip shots around the basket.”
Butler led the Hornets with nine first-half points as ASU held a 26-20 heading into the locker room. Daniel Broughton led UAPB with seven points.
Neither team shot the ball well with UAPB shooting 29 percent and the Hornets shooting 27 percent. Both teams only had five turnovers; the difference was the 23-14 advantage the Hornets had on the boards. ASU was able to score nine second chance points on 11 offensive rebounds.
