Hornets Split Tri-Match in Tuscaloosa

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama State Men's tennis team fell to the University of Alabama 7-0 before defeating conference rival Jackson State 5-2 Saturday evening at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium.

“We gave great effort today,” Head Coach Anuk Christiansz said. “The guys played with a lot of heart. We have a long season ahead of us and we can see that the program is heading in the right direction.”

The Hornets (1-1) battled tough against UA but couldn't capture the victory in their first contest on the afternoon. In singles play Bobby Brand was defeated (6-0, 6-1) by UA's Jarryd Botha. ASU's Lex Pierre and Jerred Thompson were both overwhelmed by Bama's  B. O'Shaughnessey (6-1, 6-1) and Daniil Proskura (6-1, 6-1) in both matches. Roderick Williams lost his match to Stuart Kenyon (6-1, 6-0) while Julian Cseszko got overpowered by Harris Barnard (6-3, 6-2).

Alabama State dropped its double matches to the University of Alabama (8-2, 6-2 unfinished, and 8-1).

In singles competition against Jackson State, Brand defeated JSU's Jose Luque (6-4, 6-1). Pierre was defeated by Camilo Patino (6-2, 6-2), while Thompson was outshot by Carlos Martinez (6-3, 6-3). Hernan Geria Reines fell to ASU's Stefan Vojnic (6-1, 6-4). Cseszko knocked off Ernesto Morales (6-1, 6-4) while Williams took care of Marko Milosavlsevic (6-2, 6-2).

In doubles action, the Hornets outlast Jackson State 2-0. Brand and Pierre beat Martinez and Patino (8-2), Cseszko and Williams overwhelmed Luque and Milosavlsevic  (8-4).

The Alabama State Men's and Women's team will return to action when they host Stillman College Friday, February 1 at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
