Volleyball Plays at UAB Tuesday Evening

Luiza Griz and the Lady Hornets will face UAB Tuesday Night
Alabama State University's volleyball team will head up I-65 Tuesday, Oct. 29 to face Alabama-Birmingham at 7 p.m.

ASU heads into the game with a 16-13 overall record while UAB has a 17-9 record. ASU will not be UAB's first Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) foe this season. The Blazers defeated fellow SWAC East member Alabama A&M 3-0 Sunday evening.

The Lady Hornets head into the game coming off a stretch that saw them win 11 consecutive games before falling at Texas Southern Saturday afternoon in an exciting five-set game.

"This will be a good test for us after not playing as well as we could have the past few games," Head Coach Penny Lucas-White said. "I thought we played better at TSU, but we made too many mistakes that cost us in the long run. Getting back out on the court after working on some of our problems is good to see if we made some progress."

Amber Bennett and Myla Marshall continue to be the offensive leaders for ASU, both hitting .318 with Bennett leading the team with 274 kills and Marshall with 188.

Tiara Kelley has been playing extremely well the past few games and is coming off a game at Texas Southern which saw her set a career-high with 20 kills. She is second on the team in kills with 215 and is hitting .208.

Brooke Beasley is coming off back-to-back 30 assists performances with 31 at Prairie View and a season-high 38 at Texas Southern.

The Lady Hornets must prepare for UAB's potent offense that is hitting .250 as a team. Sam Skinner leads the team with 324 kills averaging 4.21 per set. Kiriana Hirini has 281 kills and leads the Blazers with a .356 hitting percentage, while Sara Rishell has 291 kills and is hitting .344.

Becca Howard has led the offense for UAB and already has 1,008 assists on the season, averaging 11.45 per set. Rachel Faribanks leads the team in digs with 474 and Rishell leads the team in total blocks with 111.

"UAB is a really good team and they run a solid offensive system," Lucas-White said. "They have a lot of options in their attack and it will be a really good challenge for us when we play. I expect us to continue to show that never quit attitude and show improvement in the areas where we need it."
