Maurice Strong goes up with a shot against Bradley
Box Score

Jamel Waters and Luther Page both scored in double digits, but it was not enough as Alabama State fell to a hot-shooting Bradley team 85-59 in men's basketball action.

Waters scored a team-high 14 points and had a game-high seven assists while Page finished with 10 points and tied with Tony Armstrong for a team-high seven rebounds.

With the score even at four, Bradley (2-0) used a 33-13 run in the first half to push their lead out to 37-17 with four minutes left before halftime. From there the Hornets began to chip away at the lead and cut it to 13 at 41-28 by the half.

"They came out a lot more focused than we were for whatever reason," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said. "They took advantage of some of the things we weren't doing well defensively. We knew they were run the ball screens and zone and some things like that and our rotation was not good. They made shots and when they didn't they got second and third shots around the basket."

ASU did not let up coming out of the locker room and scored six quick points over the first 70 seconds to cut the lead to 41-34. From there Bradley hit five consecutive baskets with two of them three point field goals on their way to a 14-3 run and a 56-37 lead. Bradley never looked back after that run.

"I thought we started competing better during our run and got in there and mixed it up a little more," Jackson said. "That allowed us to cut the lead down to seven, but after their timeout they got more aggressive and more physical and but by the end of the half we were able to get it down from 20 to 13 and came out in the second half and got it down to seven. After that, like I said, just our inexperience took over."

Just like ASU's opening season loss at Illinois, the Hornets struggled getting rebounds and finished the game with Bradley out rebounding ASU 43-27. 13 of those rebounds were offensive and led to 13 second chance points.

"Our youth and inexperience came into play as they were forcing tough shots and we were getting only one effort (shot) and they were getting multiple efforts," Jackson said. "Of course the size they had hurt us as well."

ASU (0-2) struggled in all phases of shooting the ball against the hosts' from the Missouri Valley Conference. ASU hit 23 of their 60 field goal attempts for 38.3 percent. ASU could only manage to get three of their 24 three point shots to fall (12.5%) and hit 10 of 21 free throws.

On the other hand Bradley shot 59.3 percent from the field led by Walt Lemon's game-high 19 points. Omar Grier also hit double digits with 13.

"You can't say enough about Lemon," Jackson said. "He made things happened by hitting some shots and drawing double teams and dishing to the guys who are wide open."

Bradley finished the game shooting 59.3 percent from the field after shooting almost 61 percent in the second half. They hit six of their 17 three point field goals and shot 63 percent from the free throw line (15-24).

Bradley used a 57.7 percent shooting performance in the first half to take that 41-28 halftime lead. Lemon led the way with nine points while Jordan Prosser and Grier added eight each.

Bradley muscled their way to a 21-12 lead in rebounding with seven of those coming on the offensive end.

ASU was led in scoring by Bobby Brown who came off the bench to score six. Page and Waters had five each as the Hornets shot 36.7 percent and only hit two of their 13 three point attempts in the opening half.

The Hornets will host their first home game of the season Wednesday, Nov. 13 when the University of Mobile comes to town. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip.
