The Alabama State University's men's basketball team will open the home part of the 2013-14 season when they play host to University of Mobile Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m.
ASU (0-2) enters the game also looking for their first win of the season after dropping games at Illinois and Bradley to open the season.
"It's always good to come home and play in front of your fans," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "We played two good programs on the road and we did some good things, so hopefully we can get better at some of the things we have not done well in our first two games and pick up our first win of the season."
The Hornets are led by sophomore
Jamel Waters who is averaging 20.5 points per game after the first two games, and that includes a career-high 27 points at Illinois.
"Jamel really worked hard in the off season and it is showing," Jackson said. "We knew coming into the season we needed some leadership out of Jamel and he is giving us some of that on the court."
Luther Page is averaging 7.5 points and four rebounds per game and shooting 50 percent from the field.
Bobby Brown and freshman
Terrance LeFlore are both averaging seven points per game.
Maurice Strong and
Tony Armstrong are leading ASU in rebounding after the first two games. Strong is pulling down 5.5 rebounds per game and Armstrong is not far behind averaging five boards per game.
While ASU has struggled putting the ball through the hoop at times, it is the defense that has the coaches working overtime on trying to correct some things that have been going wrong.
"We have always preached defense at ASU and we have a lot of improvement to go on that end of the court," Jackson said. "A lot of our problems on defense have come from not doing the simplest of things and that is communicating. We are not doing a good job of talking and with a young team like we have here that is always something you have to work on a lot."
Mobile (1-1) comes into Montgomery bringing a team that likes to get up and down the court. They have four starters returning from last season's 16-14 team.
The Rams are averaging 83.5 points per game and are shooting 45 percent from the field. They shoot a lot of threes and have hit 43 percent of those through their first two games.
Mobile has three players averaging in double figures led by Brandon Morris who is averaging 24 points per game. Cody Scott averages 15 points and Kwame Beard is averaging 10.
"Mobile is going to be a good test for this young team," Jackson said. "They get the ball out of the net and get up and down the court in a hurry. This will really test our transition defense and really make us work to pick up all of their shooters while playing in a hurry."
