The Alabama State women's basketball team will look for its sixth straight home win on Friday at 6 p.m. against Mercer at the Dunn Oliver Acadome.
Â
Mercer (6-4) is coming off a 60-54 win over Jacksonville State at Jacksonville Tuesday night. The Bears hold a 6-2 overall series lead against the Lady Hornets. The last time the two teams met was during the 2012 season and Mercer defeated Alabama State 65-55 in Macon, Ga. This will be the second time that the Bears will play on the Dunn-Oliver Acadome floor (Last time played 1995).
Â
"It's been a long time since we've hosted Mercer here in Montgomery," said head coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson. "We are most definitely are going to have to stay a step ahead of them the whole game and keep them from getting ahead of us.  We will look for our sixth man (ASU fans) to come out and support us."
Â
Alabama State (5-2) has won their last two home games by four points or fewer. The Lady Hornets defeated Florida A&M in a 64-63 victory Tuesday night and had three players in double figures in the win. Seniors
Nakiya Smith had 18 points and
Quentori Alford scored 13, while freshman
Kayla Tucker scored 12 off the bench points to lead the team.
Â
Alford leads ASU in scoring and rebounding averaging 10.6 points per contest, while averaging 8.7 rebounds. She is followed by Smith who is averaging 10.3 points per game. The squad as a whole is averaging 62.4 points.
Â
Mercer has four players in double figures leading the team in scoring. Precious Bridges is the top player for the Bears averaging 17 points per game, while Kendra Grant is averaging 12.9 points and teammates Briana Williams and Alicia Williams both are averaging 11 points per contest.
Â
"Mercer has four young ladies that are averaging in double figures," Freeman-Jackson said. "I told my girls that each game means a different challenge, so we must figure out how we can stop each one of these young ladies. This team is a mixture of Samford and Troy and we had to put two game plans together to play Mercer."
Â
"Mercer is most definitely a talented team and we have our work cut out for us, but if we do what we are supposed to do on the defensive end, we should be in pretty good shape. We are going to have to just find a way to win.  They are playing here at our place and we need to make sure we allow them one possession basketball."
