Jamel Waters led a trio of Hornets in double digits with 17 points, but it was not enough as the Alabama State fell 84-66 to Tulane in the Westin Holiday Classic.

Joining Waters in double digit scoring was DeMarcus Strong with 14 and Bobby Brown came off the bench to add 12. Despite the three double-digits scorers, the Hornets only managed to shoot 42 percent (22-53) from the field. Those shooting woes included only hitting seven of 25 (28 percent) from beyond the three point line and at the free throw line where they hit 15 of their 23 attempts (65 percent).

"We just did not shoot the ball very well today," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said. "We ran our offense and got open shots but could not knock them down. We had opportunities to keep it right there close and we would get to the free throw line and not hit those."

In contrast the host was not very hospitable as they shot 55 percent (29-53) from the field and even better at the free throw line where there were almost perfect hitting 22 of 23 (96 percent).

"We put them on the free throw line way too much and they only missed one or two of them," Jackson said. "We didn't move our feet and did not play good defense. On top of that we gave up too many second chances on offensive rebounds."

"We knew they were a great offensive team and were a good rebounding team and we didn't do a very good job of keeping them off the glass."

Waters had a game-high eight assists and another game-high with two steals. Tony Armstrong came off the bench for ASU and had a team-high six rebounds while Luther Page added five rebounds.

Tulane led 54-34 with 15:52 left in the game before the Hornets went on a 20-to-nine run to cut the lead to 63-54 with 9:19 left, but it was a few missed free throws that seemed to stop the Hornets momentum and led to Tulane pushing the lead back out.

"Those are the things (missed free throws) that can keep a game in reach when you're making your free throws," Jackson said. "We had made a run and got the lead down to single digits and went to the free throw line and missed all of those in a row and then they came back and make a shot it takes the life out of you."

Jonathan Stark came into the game averaging 21 points per game for Tulane and that is exactly what he got with a game-high 21 to lead Tulane. Louis Dabney scored 19 and Jay Hook added 11.

Tulane (6-6) used a hot shooting first half from the field and took advantage at the free throw line in building a 43-27 halftime lead. The Green Wave shot 58 percent (14-24) from the field and hit 12 of 13 free throws in scoring their 43 points. Stark had 17 of his points in the first half and Dabney added eight.

ASU (4-4) only shot 39 percent (10-26) from the field and that includes hitting one of their 11 three point attempts. ASU did not get to the line as many times as Tulane but did hit six of their eight attempts. Waters scored nine points, but picked up two fouls and had to sit out six minutes in the opening period.

"We just have to continue to work on the things that we are not doing well," Jackson said. "Competing wise we are competing but tonight we just did not make our shots. Overall the effort was good there are just things we have to correct."

The Hornets will not have a lot of time to work on those errors as they will be back in action at the tournament tomorrow (Sunday) when they face Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 3 p.m.
