Tennis Prepares to Host North Alabama

The Alabama State Men's and Women's tennis teams are hosting North Alabama Saturday, March 23 at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center. Doubles competition begins at 9 a.m.

“I think on the men's side, we're going to be evenly matched up against North Alabama,” head coach Anuk Christiansz said. “That's actually a good thing, being that we'll be closely contested going into the SWAC roundup next weekend.  It's also good that we can play this match right before we let the athletes off for a couple of days for spring break.”

The Lady Hornets have won one of its past three contests and are led by freshman Melissa Telfer, who has a 5-9 record in singles and a doubles record of 4-8 with partner freshman Pauline Denis.

The Hornets have also won one of its past three matches, last defeating Alabama A&M 7-0 on March 9 at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Complex. The men are led by sophomore Bobby Brand. Brand holds a 4-9 singles record and a doubles record of 5-8 with multiple teammates.

“A good win for us will help us going into the SWAC roundup,” said Christiansz. “We just need to stay focused and always compete at our highest level each and every time out on the court. The girls are progressing daily but we are still playing down a player and we are young, so we're going to have growing pains, but we will always compete.”

The Alabama State tennis teams will also be hosting the Southwestern Athletic Conference East Roundup for the first time in the history of the program on Friday, March 29 through Saturday, March 30 at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center on the historical campus of ASU.
