MONTGOMERY, Ala.—Alabama State hosted North Alabama in tennis action with each team leaving the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center with a win. The Lady Hornets pulled out a 4-3 victory while the men fell to the Lions 6-1.
The women pulled out the doubles point winning by default at three and with the doubles even at one,
Arantxia Wijngaarde and
Katja Kraus pulled out a hard-fought 8-6 win at two doubles to win the point.
UNA came in a player down, so ASU entered singles play with a 2-0 lead after gaining the doubles point meaning they only needed two wins for the overall victory. It did not come easy as UNA won three of the five singles matches being played. The match came down to
Melissa Telfer's win at three singles. Telfer won the first set 7-5, but then lost the second set by the same score. In the third and deciding set, Telfer took over jumping out a 5-0 lead and finished the set off with a 6-1 win.
In men's action, the Hornets lost the doubles point dropping all three doubles games. They could not get anything going once singles play began, losing five of the six singles matches. ASU's lone win and point came at one singles where
Bobby Brand won 6-0, 6-3.
“This was a good win for the girls,” Head Coach
Anuk Christiansz said. “They hung in there and pulled out a close win. The men started slowly in doubles and just could not get anything going in the singles matches. We have a lot of work to do between now and the SWAC Round up next weekend.”
The Hornets will be back in action on Friday, March 29 when they host the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) East Round up. The round up is a two-day event which will run through Saturday, March 30.
