Tennis Falls to Jackson State and Alcorn

The Alabama State Men's and Women's tennis teams fell to Jackson State and Alcorn State on Saturday evening at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center during the final day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Roundup.

“I'm a little disappointed in how we played today,” Head Coach Anuk Christiansz said. “I thought we should have won the match earlier against Jackson State especially after beating them earlier in the season, but today we're struggling here, so yeah I was a little disappointed. We are still young though and have a lot of work to do before heading to the SWAC Championships at the end of the month.”

“My expectations are a lot higher than they were a year ago at this time, so we've got to stay positive and continue working hard throughout the rest of the season to get prepared for the championships.”

The Hornets dropped a 4-3 hard fought contest to the JSU Tigers in the early matchup on the day. Bobby Brand and Julian Cseszko won 8-5 in doubles over JSU's Camilo Patino and Carlos Martinez. Stefan Vojnic and Roderick Williams knocked off Hernan Geria Reines and Marko Milosavlievic 8-5 as well.

Brand and Cseszko were the only Hornets to advance in singles competition.

In match two against Alcorn, the men's team played well but couldn't pull off the upset, falling 4-3 in the night cap. Jarred Thompson, Vojnic, and Cseszko each won their singles match after dropping all of their doubles competition.

For the Lady Hornets, Arantxia Wijngaarde and Katja Kraus overwhelmed Rebekah Adewumi and Angie Condorelli 8-3 in doubles competition. Wijngaarde and Melissa Telfer won in singles, but Alabama State couldn't pull out the victory, falling 5-2 to Jackson State in its first matchup on the day.

Against Alcorn, the ladies dropped the 6-1 match in the late game. Wijngaarde was the lone winner on the women's team in singles.

Making the tournament is not the hard part, but I want to do better and win it,” said Christiansz. “That's the only reason you become a coach and I like to compete, but we've been coming up a little short. We're not too far behind, but we still have a lot of work to do.”
