Tennis Splits Today's Tri Match

MONTGOMERY, Ala.—Alabama State University's tennis team hosted a tri match today with Alabama A&M and the University of New Orleans as the opponents.

In the opening match against SWAC rival Alabama A&M, the Hornets made it a clean sweep winning 7-0. The most exciting match of the game was at one singles where ASU's Bobby Brand came back from a 0-6, 2-5 deficit to defeat Desta Sandy 0-6, 7-5 and 10-6 in a third set tiebreak.

The Lady Hornets made it a sweep with their 5-2 win over AAMU. The Lady Hornets gained the upper hand in doubles action gaining wins at one and two to pick up the doubles point, but it was not without a struggle. With the doubles tied at one, ASU's one doubles team of Pauline Denis and Melissa Telfer grabbed the point clinching win 9-8 over AAMU's Shannon Warner and Morgan Shaw.

The Lady Hornets then picked up single wins from Arantxia Wijngaarde, Telfer, Mechelle Barton and Katja Krauss to solidify the win. Again, it was a battle as three of the six singles went to third sets before they were decided. The win avenged an earlier loss to the Lady Bulldogs at the SWAC Round Up.

After less than an hour to rest, the Hornets were back on the courts to face two talented teams from New Orleans and even though both teams fought hard, New Orleans was able to take advantage of a tiring ASU team and win both contests 7-0.

“I am very proud of the win this morning,” Head Coach Anuk Christiansz said. “This afternoon you could tell we became tired and New Orleans is a good team and they took advantage of that. We had several players that played tough in the early going, but just tired out.”

“I continue to see tremendous growth in the program. Our effort is there and we are getting better as a team. I am very optimistic on where the programs are going.”

After today's action the Hornets stand 5-8 overall and the Lady Hornets are 3-10. The men's team at AAMU now stands 0-8 and the women are 1-9. New Orleans moves to 5-4 on the men's side and 3-7 for the women.

The tennis teams will be back on the court March 15 when they travel to Jacksonville State University. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
