Tennis to Compete in SWAC Tournament

The Alabama State Men's and Women's tennis teams will travel to New Orleans, La. to compete in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament beginning Friday, April 19 through Sunday, April 21 at City Park.

The men's team will face six seeded Alabama A&M at 1 p.m.; while the women take on the fourth seed Prairie View A&M at  9 a.m. in the opening round on Friday, April 19.

“Well, we are in a better position on the guys' side than we are on the women's side, being that we don't have as much depth on the women's side as we do on the men's side,” ASU's Head Tennis Coach Anuk Christiansz said. “ I think we have made tremendous improvement from last year in some places, but we still have a lot of work to do to become a complete team on both sides.”

The Hornets enter the tournament as the fourth seed with a 5-12 overall record and a 2-3 SWAC record. ASU has been led by sophomore Bobby Brand in singles competition during the regular season with a 2-3 singles record in conference play; while Brand and senior Lex Pierre lead the team in doubles action.

The Lady Hornets enter the tournament as the sixth seed with a 4-17 overall record and a 2-5 SWAC record. Alabama State is led by Arantxia Wijngaarde in singles play; while Pauline Denis and Melissa Telfer hold a 2-3 doubles record and lead ASU in doubles action.

“Obviously, we want to win the tournament,” said Christiansz. “With every match being our last match, I would like to see everyone play their hearts out, as if there were no tomorrow. I want for this weekend to be a grandstand for the student-athletes who will be playing their last match as a college athlete and for the ones who will be returning, just do their best and leave everything on the court afterwards.”
