Women Tennis Eliminated; Men Defeat Alabama A&M

NEW ORLEANS, La. – After a six hour rain delay, the Alabama State Women's tennis team fell 4-0 to Prairie View A&M; while the ASU Men's team knocked off in-state rival and conference foe Alabama A&M 4-0 in the nightcap at City Park/Pepsi Tennis Courts during the semifinal round of the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Tennis Championship.

The Lady Hornets No. 1 doubles team (Melissa Telfer and Pauline Denis) opened the day strong, gathering the first two points in the first set but wasn't able to finish, dropping their match 8-6 to PVA&M.

ASU's Mechelle Barton and Brianna Fairley fell 8-4 to Prairie View's No. 3 doubles team.

In singles, Denis fell in the No. 3 spot to PV's Christine Gwodog (6-2, 6-1). Fairley dropped her match (6-4, 6-0) to PV's Danielle Moore in the No. 5 spot; while in the No. 6 spot, Barton was overpowered by Prairie View's Erika Bond (6-0, 6-3).

Alabama State's Lex Pierre and Jarred Thompson got the Hornets started defeating A&M's No. 2 doubles team 9-7 in a hard fought matchup. ASU's No. 3 team, Stefan Vojnic and Roderick Williams won by forfeit, due to Alabama A&M's shortness of players.

In singles competition, Thompson overwhelmed A&M's William Law 6-0, 6-1 in their match. ASU's Julian Cseszko trampled Evan Brown 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 5 spot; while Williams won his match by forfeit.

The men's team will face the number one seed Prairie View Panthers at 1 p.m. at the City Park/Pepsi Tennis Courts.
