Lady Hornets Drop Season Opener To Troy 3-0

Box Score
The Alabama State soccer team drops season opener 3-0 to the Troy Trojans Friday night in Montgomery, Ala. at the ASU Soccer Complex.

"Considering this is our first live action there are a lot of positives to take out of this," head coach Jodie Smith said. "We've improved defensively since last season so that's a good thing, and overall we have put a great effort up against a great Troy team "

With Troy (1-0) having nine starters and 15 letter winners from last season's team, the first half saw the talent of both teams defensively holding a scoreless first half. However, the Trojans went on to score a goal to set the tone in the early minutes of the second period. Freshman Middle Necee Jennings scored minutes later off an assist from Jane Latif. Alabama State (0-1) had missed opportunites but wasn't able to capilize on them.

In the 53rd minute Kirsten Rendall scored off an assist from Cecilia Thorngren. The Trojans scored their last goal off a penalty kick by Annabell Simpson in the 77th minute.

Alabama State's junior goalkeeper Kylee Hathaway had 13 saves in the match. The Trojans were able to take advantage of a tiring Lady Hornets defense and outshot ASU 24-5.

Alabama State will be back in action when they face South Carolina State Sunday, August 25 at the ASU Soccer Complex in Montgomery, Ala. The match is slated for 1 p.m.
