Box Score
Bobby Brown scored a career-high 22 points to lead Alabama State to a 93-62 win over Mississippi Valley State University.
Â
Brown had plenty of offensive help as ASU had three other players reach double digit scoring.Â
DeMarcus Robinson came off his 27-point performance against Jackson State to score 18 in tonight's action.Â
Jamel Waters added 17 and
Maurice Strong added a double-double with a career-high 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Â
"Bobby is so athletic and he can do so many things for us," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "We bring him in as a sub but he could very easily be a starter for us, but he can come in and give us points, he shoots the ball well, he rebounds well and he is starting to move his feet well. He is starting to play real well for us and those are the things we like about him because we can play him at multiple positions."
Â
ASU (8-6/2-1 SWAC) had one of their best halves shooting the basketball when they shot 58 percent (18-31) in the second half of the 31 point win. They hit three of their eight three point attempts and were solid at the free throw line hitting 13 of 17 as ASU scored 52 points in the second half.
Â
The 52-point outburst in tonight's second half was ASU's largest scoring half of the season.
Â
ASU finished the game shooting 49 percent (31-63) from the field and hit seven of their 18 three point attempts for 39 percent, and were once again solid at the free throw line connecting on 24 of their 32 attempts for 75 percent.
Â
MVSU (4-11/0-2 SWAC) came into the game the league's second leading scoring team averaging 76.6 points per game, but the Hornets defense was able to hold MVSU to 34 percent (24-71) shooting from the field. MVSU also was first in the conference making over seven three's per game and hitting 35 percent of their three's which was second.
Â
Tonight ASU's top three point percentage defense held MVSU to only three of 20 (15 percent) from beyond the three point line.
Â
"In the Jackson game we let their guards get into the lane a lot and this week we worked on closing the gaps," Jackson said. "We knew Valley would come in here and they have great guards that like to put it on the floor and get in the lane and we wanted to try and close the gaps on them and tonight I thought we did a pretty good job of closing."
Â
Strong led the ASU rebounding effort and Brown was one away from a double-double of his own as he finished the game with nine rebounds.Â
Luther Page and
Brandon Graham finished with seven each as the Hornets out rebounded MVSU 49-39. Waters hit his average with his game-high seven assists to go with his points.
Â
Jeffrey Simmons was the Delta Devils leading scorer with 15 points and Daniel Hurtt came off the bench to score 11. Ervin Thomas led MVSU in rebounding with 10.
Â
The first half did not start out as the Hornets had wanted, struggling to get the ball in the hoop. ASU trailed 9-7 with 11:56 left in the opening half and was only shooting 21.4 percent. ASU hit 10 of their final 18 field goals from there until halftime to build a 41-28 lead heading into the locker room.
Â
Brown led the charge with 15 first half points hitting four of six from the field after coming off the bench. That includes hitting two three point attempts and all five of free throw attempts.
Â
ASU finished the half shooting 41 percent from the field and held the Delta Devils to 32 percent.
Â
The Hornets will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff Monday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. It is the second game of ASU's current three-game home stand.
Â
"Pine Bluff is coming in here and Coach (George) Ivory does a really good job with his team," Jackson said. "The thing is we just want to outscore our opponent whatever the situation may be, but we are really going to have our hands full with his bigs around the basket and their quick guards as well as they try to get into the lane."
