The Alabama State University men's basketball team will continue their season-opening conference road swing when they face Jackson State Monday, Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
Â
The Hornets (7-5/1-0 DSWAC) are coming off a 68-51 win at Grambling to open conference action but only have one day to prepare for the Tigers (4-9/0-1 SWAC) who fell 68-61 to Alabama A&M to open their SWAC schedule.
Â
"We took some time to look at some video of Jackson State as coaches and then we looked at it with the guys," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "We are trying to put a game plan together and will work on it at our practice session and hopefully we can pick up another win Monday night."
Â
ASU still has
Jamel Waters leading the team in scoring at 13.8 points per game.Â
DeMarcus Robinson is coming off a season-low two points in the win at Grambling but still averages 12.6.Â
Bobby Brown is coming off the bench and after his 18 point effort at Grambling; he has his scoring average up to 9.7.
Â
JSU has the SWAC's fourth leading scorer in Julysses Nobles, a transfer from the University of Arkansas who averages 15 points per game. His teammate, another first year player, Brandon West, is the SWAC's only player averaging a double-double at 11.6 points and 11.1 rebounds per game, which leads the conference.
Â
The game will also feature two of the top three defensive teams in the SWAC. ASU's defense is second in the conference only allowing 69.1 points per game and JSU is third giving up an average of 69.9 points per game.
Â
Each team's offense has struggled shooting the ball so far this season. ASU is shooting .432 from the field which is fourth in the conference and JSU's .410 shooting percentage is sixth.
Â
Jamel Waters added seven assists to his total against Grambling and now has 88 on the season and leads the SWAC averaging 7.3 per game.
Â
The Hornets have gotten a lot of production from their bench this season and the game against Grambling was a perfect example where 33 of ASU's 68 points came off the bench in the form of Brown's 18,
Terrance LeFlore's career-high 13 and two from
Tony Jacob, who was playing in his fourth game of the season.
Â
"We have gotten good production from our bench," Jackson said. "Bobby (Brown) could be a starter, but he has really given us a lot of production around the basket and from the perimeter along with some good rebounding. Terrance is just a freshman, but we are using him at two different positions and our other bench players have added to that production."
